Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has made it clear that the Season 3 finale was never intended to hint at an American spinoff. In a recent interview, Hwang explained that the closing scene—featuring a female recruiter operating in Los Angeles—was designed to emphasize the recurring cycle of the brutal game, not to set the stage for a U.S.-based version.
To make the scene memorable, Hwang cast Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett in the brief role, saying she possessed the kind of screen presence that could “command attention instantly.”
The season’s final episode, which premiered on 27 June 2025, showed Gi-Hun making the ultimate sacrifice during a deadly game of hide-and-seek to save a baby. Later, Hwang In-ho was seen delivering Gi-Hun’s belongings to his daughter living in the U.S.
Responding to speculation about a possible American adaptation led by filmmaker David Fincher, Hwang clarified that he hasn’t received any official communication from Netflix regarding such a project and emphasized that he would personally oversee any future continuation of the series.
