The DC Universe is entering an ambitious new phase under the leadership of DC Studios co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran. Their fresh vision, titled Gods and Monsters, marks the beginning of a cinematic reset featuring reimagined heroes, darker tones, and long-anticipated characters.
A New Superman Leads the Charge
The first major step in this rebooted universe is the upcoming Superman film, set to premiere on July 11, 2025. This new take on the Man of Steel will star David Corenswet in the titular role, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult portraying the iconic villain Lex Luthor.
According to People, the movie will also introduce several DC staples, including Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Metamorpho—suggesting a richer, interconnected universe from the start.
Supergirl and Clayface Get Their Spotlight
Following Superman, the highly anticipated Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will hit theatres on June 26, 2026. Milly Alcock, known for House of the Dragon, takes on the role of Kara Zor-El. James Gunn has hinted that Supergirl’s story will diverge significantly from Superman’s, with a more emotionally layered and complicated origin.
Reports also suggest that Jason Momoa will appear in the film as Lobo, the notorious cosmic bounty hunter. The cast will additionally feature Eve Ridley and Matthias Schoenaerts in undisclosed roles.
That same year, on September 11, audiences will be introduced to Clayface, a film centered around one of Gotham’s more tragic and terrifying villains. Tom Rhys Harries plays the lead—a failed actor who transforms into a monstrous shape-shifter in a desperate attempt to reclaim fame. Directed by James Watkins, the movie is expected to take a darker, psychological approach to DC’s rogues’ gallery.
A New Batman and the Bat Family
The Brave and the Bold will bring a fresh Batman into the fold, completely separate from previous versions played by Robert Pattinson or Ben Affleck. This iteration will focus on the Caped Crusader’s dynamic with his deadly assassin-trained son, Damian Wayne, who will appear as Robin for the first time in live-action.
The film draws inspiration from Grant Morrison’s beloved comic series. Peter Safran also hinted that other key members of the Bat Family—long ignored in previous adaptations—may finally get their due on the big screen.
Animated Brotherhood and a Team of Anti-Heroes
Dynamic Duo, a unique animated and CGI hybrid, is slated for a June 30, 2028 release. The story will center on the complex relationship between two former Robins—Dick Grayson, now Nightwing, and Jason Todd, who has taken on the mantle of Red Hood. The film promises to explore their evolving bond and personal struggles, offering a grounded take within a stylized format.
Finally, The Authority is in the early stages of development. This film will spotlight a morally ambiguous team of superheroes with unconventional methods. One of its members, Engineer (played by Maria Gabriela de Faria), will make her debut in the upcoming Superman movie as part of Lex Luthor’s team—laying the groundwork for the ensemble’s eventual appearance.
A Universe with Grit and Depth
With this ambitious lineup, James Gunn and Peter Safran are steering DC toward a more interconnected and daring cinematic universe—one that blends iconic characters with lesser-known figures and takes creative risks that could reshape superhero storytelling in the years ahead.
